We’re celebrating an incredible milestone this year as it’s our 25th anniversary! It’s 25 years of helping students fast-track to university and turning their dream careers into reality while having fun on campus.
About SIBT and WSUSCC
At Sydney Institute of Business and Technology (SIBT), we offer diplomas in a variety of areas to help students find their path. These areas include arts (social science), business, engineering, information technology, and media and communications. But a student’s education journey doesn’t end there. After a student completes their diploma in 8 or 12 months, they can fast-track to the second year of their bachelor’s degree at Western Sydney University, Sydney City Campus (WSUSCC), which is ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide!
SIBT and WSUSCC share the same campus, so students are part of Western Sydney University (WSU) from day 1. They’ll make friends from both SIBT and their future program at WSU, and they’ll interact with the same staff across both institutions throughout their education journey which ensures uninterrupted support.
Gaining practical experience
But education is more than just theory. It is also about the practical experience that a student can attain before they launch their careers. At SIBT and WSUSCC, we offer practical workshops, such as Career and Job Skills Workshops, and industry placements for WSUSCC students to help them prepare for life after university.
A Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and a Bachelor of Engineering Science both require 12 weeks of industrial experience. It is a great opportunity for students to implement all that they have learned in the real world. A few places where students have done their placements include Aurecon, AECOM, Transport for NSW and Greenland China.
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) has Provisional Accreditation at the level of Professional Engineering for three majors – Civil, Electrical and Mechanical. After graduating from this program, students are able to apply for full membership of Engineers Australia. Engineers Australia is Australia’s peak body for engineering. They have globally recognised credentials and international agreements which allows its members to live and work around the world.
Students are eligible to apply for Chartered Professional Engineering registration after they complete the required engineering practise as outlined by Engineers Australia. Becoming a Chartered engineer brings many opportunities. In addition to having a mark of excellence, it will bring global recognition as Charted engineers are recognised worldwide for their skills and professionalism. Being a Charted engineer can also provide both career progression and leadership development.
The Bachelor of Engineering Science has been designed to meet Engineers Australia professional accreditation requirements – Competency Stage 1 Engineering Technologist and Australian Quality Frameworks (AQF) Level 7. Once graduated, students are able to apply for full membership at Engineers Australia. After they’ve completed the required engineering practice period as determined by Engineers Australia, they are able to apply for Certified Engineering Technologist registration. By being a member with Engineers Australia, graduates will be able to boost their employability and move their career forward.
John is a current student at WSUSCC with a bright future ahead of him. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and through his degree, he is looking towards a career in consulting engineering and one day having his own business.
Information Communications and Technology (ICT) also has placement opportunities. It is optional for students studying a bachelor’s degree in ICT or Information Systems (IS), but compulsory with a master’s degree in ICT. After completing their bachelor program in ICT, students are eligible for professional membership of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) while the IS bachelor’s degree and ICT master’s degree is accredited with the ACS at Professional Level.
ACS is a professional association for Australia’s tech sector which supports ICT professionals across their career journey. By joining, graduates will be supported as they seek their first job while they build skills through networking opportunities, information and career advice.
Turning dreams into reality
Since 1997, we have helped around 27,000 students prepare for university success. But we know that there are many more students out there who are looking for a pathway to university. We are excited to have these students join us so that we can help them find their path and turn their dreams into reality.
