Balancing Part-Time Work and Studies: A Guide for Students

Getting the best grades is always the goal — but for many students, having a part-time job is just part of college life. Whether you’re looking to make some extra cash or build up your résumé, balancing it all can make a huge difference.

At Sydney Institute of Business and Technology (SIBT), we’re here to help you stay on track – both in and outside of the classroom. Here are a few quick tips to help you find the sweet spot between work and study.

Stay Focused
When it’s time to study, really study! Put your phone on Do Not Disturb, find a spot without distractions, and tackle your weekly tasks one by one. Staying focused during your set study times helps you stay on top of your classwork and saves you from last-minute stress.

Plan Your Week
You’ve got your class timetable and your work shifts — now it’s time to plan out the rest of your week. Study blocks, social catch-ups, exercise and chores — it all counts! Include campus activities too — they’re a great way to make new friends, get involved in student life, then head back to the library to hit the books again.

But here’s the thing — having a plan is great, but sticking to it is the hardest part.

Learn to Say No
Got a road trip planned for the weekend? Or a party coming up? Sometimes, you just have to say no — especially when assignments or exams are just around the corner. It’s easy to fall behind and much harder to catch up, so protect your study time and don’t be afraid to skip events if you need to.

Keep Up Healthy Habits
Make sure you look after yourself. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day — a walk, a workout, or even some stretching between classes. Staying active helps keep your mind clear and your energy up. Deep breathing or meditation can help too, especially on busy days.
