Skills for Good Health

Good Health

Good health is more than just looking after your body. There are 4 key areas in relation to skills for good health – mindfulness, time management, support and stress management.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about focusing on the present. This means that you’re not thinking about things that have happened in the past or worrying about the future. So how can you focus on the present? One way is to focus on your breathing, with attention placed on the rise and fall of your breath. Your mind will wander, as this is what it naturally does, but you’ll have to refocus your mind back to your breathing.

The benefits from mindfulness includes:

  • Reduced stress/anxiety symptoms
  • Peace of mind
  • Improved work and study performance
  • Enhanced cognitive performance, including concentration and memory

Time management

Studying at college takes up a lot time, so it’s important to be able to manage your time well. But sometimes, procrastination occurs and this makes things a bit more difficult. Procrastination occurs when you start putting things off, and occurs when we’re feeling uncertain about an upcoming task or substituting tasks around.

A few things that you can do to help improve your time management skills include:

  • Writing down your list of things to do along with a due date
  • Give yourself reminders
  • Reward yourself when you finish tasks
  • Prepare study tools and eliminate distractions

Support

Support is all about your network and making sure that you have supportive friends and family. It’s important that you make time to see your friends and family. If you’re looking to create some supportive connections, then you should attend activities where you can meet new people such as volunteer work, class, clubs/societies, or events.

Stress management

Stress is part of everyday life, and we can’t avoid it. It may be a part of your studies, your personal life, your finances, or something else, but stress is there. The good news is that there are steps that you can take to deal with stress:

  • Exercise
  • Engage with a few hobbies
